# Best PCB DFM check tools in 2026 (an honest roundup)

These are the five tools we’d actually point a hardware builder at for pre-production design checks. Ranking criterion, stated up front: depth of checks you get without paying, then breadth of input-format support. By that measure MakeIRL — our own product, and the only paid tool here — ranks last, and we say so. Its niche is different: it gates KiCad source before gerbers exist, which none of the free fab-side checkers do.

**Q: What is a PCB DFM check?**
A design-for-manufacturability (DFM) check analyzes a board design — usually the exported gerber files — for issues that would cause fabrication problems: trace width and spacing violations, drill and annular ring problems, solder mask and silkscreen conflicts, and similar. Fabs offer free DFM checkers so problems surface before production.

**Q: Are these tools free?**
Four of the five are free (as of July 2026): JLC DFM, NextPCB's online gerber viewer and HQDFM desktop app, AdvancedPCB's FreeDFM, and Sierra Circuits' Better DFM. MakeIRL is the exception at $79 one-time per board release — it checks the KiCad source (schematic, layout, BOM) rather than exported gerbers.

**Q: Do any of these tools guarantee my board will work?**
No. All of them check manufacturability or design-consistency, not function. MakeIRL states this explicitly — a passing report reads “READY FOR MANUFACTURING — function not proven” — and no gerber-level DFM check can prove a circuit does what you intended either.
